Buckeye Information Design

This information design was aimed to provide insight into my favorite seed: the buckeye. It has a lot of lore that others might not know about, especially those that didn’t grow up in the buckeye state.

The biggest challenge of this design was to plan how to transform my research into a visual and clearly communicated form. As this poster is 24x36 inches, it provided a lot of space to learn how to work with.

The left side of the poster includes general information about the buckeye as the aim was to educate people about what it is.

I wanted a visual way to share what different parts of the tree look like before explaining what they are used for.

The right side explains the uses of the buckeye plant as that tends to be a common next question. I separated this part between dangerous and useful components of the plant.

  • This piece began by mapping out colors and learning sizing with the amount of space I had.

  • My first drafts began vertical, and my process involved taking lots of buckeye pictures to match color and style to them.

  • Things felt a little more natural with this project after I decided to move horizontally. From there, I chose to divide the information in thirds.

  • This was one of my final drafts with the inclusion of a pocket with buckeyes. I later decided that it was still too chaotic for what I was going for.
